Using a Courier Vs. Your Staff For Deliveries

Published: September 26, 2022

Small businesses are busy places. As such, you have a vested interest in “getting it done”. It’s common that if something needs to be somewhere you’ll take it yourself, or get one of your trusted employees to take it for you. It just seems like the easier and cheaper thing to do, right?

We’re here to dispel that belief. Once you factor in all the costs associated with you or an associate delivering something, you might find that you would have been much better off hiring a courier to do it for you instead. Here’s a list of the costs you incur when you do a personal drop-off or use your in-house staff.

1) Productivity Cost

Everyone at your office has a job to do, including you! If you’re delivering a package personally, you’re taken away from potential money-making work. Alternatively, somebody else has to pick up the slack, which takes him or her away from their job. Eventually, you’ll pay for the lost time in overtime fees and like the old saying goes “time is money!”

2) Fuel and Mileage

It’s normal to compensate your employees for fuel and mileage if they are using their own vehicles for work-related driving. With current gas prices, if compensation isn’t fair, employees may not be willing to take their own car out on business matters! Don’t forget wear and tear on a vehicle.

3) Parking

This one hits hard if your drop-off point is in downtown Calgary or any metropolitan downtown, for that matter. Parking costs are high and personal vehicles don’t have the authorization to park in loading bays like commercial vehicles do. A ticket or a tow would really make hiring a courier the obvious choice.

4) Insurance

If you use a vehicle for business purposes, the cost of insurance goes up. If you use your vehicle for commercial purposes without the correct insurance, you risk some stiff penalties, and could perhaps not have your costs covered in the event of an accident.

Once you add in the associated costs and time, most companies will find more value in calling Select Delivery Systems to courier their package in Calgary or the closely surrounding areas within Alberta. We’ll come to your office or warehouse for pickup and strive to ensure that it will be where you need it to be, intact and on time.
